Just received a good question in response to my post on the HPU:Switchboard

what about a doamin name, can i have
 www.mydomain.com
or will it have an extension on it e.g.
 mydomain.tooum.com

Good question! It also allows me to introduce the first cool feature that will implemented early next week.

Custom Domains

By default, your Switchboard will be available at http://yourswitchboard.tooum.net which, thanks to our short domain, is not too hard to forget. However, you can customise this even further. If you have your own domain, you can simply create a simple CNAME record within your DNS zone records and then you will be able to access your Switchboard at your domain.

This feature is already implemented, but is not yet configurable via the admin area. So if you want to use your own domain or even your own subdomain and cannot wait until next week, simply drop me a line: joel [at] tooum.com and we will get that sorted for you.

how will this feature work? will it be a downloadable package of the software that we can upload to our own server/host; or will it still be hosted on your servers?

when is this going to be available?

This Alias feature was implemented last week and is controllable via the Admin > Settings screen of your Switchboard.

It basically creates an alias of your Switchboard subdomain. So instead of joel.tooum.net you can go to joelswitchboard.com or whatever domain you want to use.

it works on a subdomain of your domain (like mine @ team.thebusyproject.org.uk)

It works with the hosted service, which as far as im aware is the future of tooum. when they are 'joined' using CNAME, it integrates well into your own site though.

You tell tooum (in the ADMIN Settings) what your subdomain is going to be (team, for mine) and a few other litting bits of info, then you set up a CNAME in your domian control panel with the subdomain info and TOUM.net

It's incredably easy, and fast.

That is exactly what we are trying to make Switchboard.

I'd rather have the software on my own server under my own top domain at my own database, just like I'm doing with Wordpress and phpBB and phpNuke.

I can't see any download section here, so I guess it's not possible. Reason for me not to go ahead with Switchboard.

Switchboard is a hosted only service. We have no plans to allow the software to used on your own servers.

What I can't see easilly is the following: Can I truly integrate this service in my own site? I do not mean hosting it myself, what I mean is F.E. use PHP or simmilar tags to get content / interaction elements within my own page, where I place them? (more or less)

What you are describing is not possible at this time, but we do plan on offering an API, which you will be able to use to interface direcly with your Switchboard data and integrate that directly into your site using your favourite scripting language.

At the moment, you will simply have to link to your Switchboard.
